A Box of Stuff
Dec 17th, 2007 by Larry
I took my yearly trip to the storage locker yesterday to retrieve our Christmas decorations. It’s just a small climate controlled storage unit about 5 miles from my home. Besides Christmas decorations, I store other stuff I have no other place for like some old stereo equipment that I haven’t been able to part with. I know that I will never use it again but to me it has value. There are some boxes of old tax forms that could have been destroyed long ago along with boxes filled with the personal possessions of my long deceased father. While making sure that I had all of the decorations, I opened a small box not knowing what to expect and in it were some sunglasses, a watch, and several old wallets. In just that instant, the memories came flooding back to me. The watch was a gift to my father from his employer of more than 40 years and it has his name engraved on the back. Thank you for 40 years of faithful service with the company logo emblazoned on the back along with the words and date.
After looking over the watch, I started rummaging through the wallets, even though my grandson was now loading some boxes on the cart by himself. Drivers license, old credit cards, a picture of his mother (my grandmother), and other old stuff no longer needed.
Grand Dad, what are you looking at, I was questioned. Oh nothing just some old things I haven’t seen in a long time, I answered. I’ll be there in a minute.
Life is so fragile and the things we value now are just things that someone will be rummaging through some day. I will be 54 years old in a couple days and it has taken me all of this time to realize that we will all be thought of from a box of stuff someday. I wonder what those thoughts will be.
